The Magic of Christingle – Photos

The season of Advent got off to a magical start last Sunday at our annual Christingle service.
The church was packed and the chancel was festooned with oranges (of varying sizes!) , candles and sweeties.  Rev’d Becky and her merry band of helpers, assembled the giant christingle and explained the meaning and symbolism of the orange, its red ribbon, the sweets and the candle.  And there was a special sort of hush throughout the church as the lights were dimmed and the Christingles were lit.  Singing ‘Away in a Manger’ by candlelight – it really did feel like Christmas.
A collection was received for the Children’s Society, which works tirelessly during the year to make sure that no …

Stay & Play Every Wednesday Morning

Did you know that every Wednesday morning we have a service at St George’s particularly aimed at parents with their babies and small children?
All through the year we serve fresh coffee, tea, squash and biscuits (sometimes cake!) from 9am in the meeting room.  There are toys for children and its a chance for parents to have a chat and a catch up over a coffee.
At 9.30 we hold a very informal service in the kids corner of the church, where there are more toys as well as baby mats and colouring things for the children, musical instruments to play during the songs, and fruit for children during communion.  Its very low key, and very friendly.  Just …

Homeless Provision for Newbury – Update!

We have received the following information from West Berkshire Homeless regarding plans to improve facilities for winter 2018:
(a) Two Saints has employed a second outreach worker for the winter period.  WBH is working with them in finding both work and accommodation.
(b) Two Saints will have a twenty-bed (possibly up to thirty) facility from 7.30pm to 9.30am each day from November through to March.  Breakfast may also be provided.  They are also going to work with Loose Ends and Eight Bells in particular, to provide day time facilities during the same period but will need extra volunteers to assist in providing refreshments and socialising with the clients.
(c) In addition, WBH has been asked to provide an overflow …

Tiddlers and Toddlers – Can you help?

We are very much in need of some help at St George’s Hall at 1pm on Mondays to put out tables, chairs and toys for Tiddlers and Toddlers.  Tiddlers and Toddlers meets weekly during term time for the benefit of young children and their families – we rely on volunteers.  Help is needed to bring the toys from the outside shed into the Hall but we will only have 30 minutes to set up and are short of helpers.  If anyone is free and able to help we would be really grateful.

West Berks Foodbank – Can you spare some time?

West Berks Foodbank provides a vital service in offering emergency food parcels for individuals and families who find themselves in need.  Its a brilliant concept and relies on community initiative to run it and volunteers to donate the goods.
West Berks Foodbank hugely appreciate the support they receive from St George’s in terms of food donations, volunteers, and prayers.  There are vacancies for more responsible roles, particularly a Foodbank Centres Manager (for approx 12 hours per week) and more Lead Volunteers for our Newbury Foodbank Centre (managing this for one afternoon per fortnight). If you have some time to offer and would like more details of these roles, then please email Sarah Bennett at info@westberks.foodbank.org.uk
