Dementia Friendly Church

SERMON 18/05/14
Dementia Awareness Week
Today I want to talk about dementia. There are a number of reasons primarily that today marks the start of Dementia Awareness Week. Dementia is a growing, but little understood condition which affects 800,000 people in the UK and is likely to double in the next 40 years as many of us live longer.
The nature of the condition provides significant challenges for Christian ministry to both sufferers and carers, yet a successful ministry depends a great deal upon a shared responsibility of a community to create an environment of unconditional acceptance and belonging.
Thirdly, there are a number of people in our church family who currently suffer from the effects of dementia either as …

Rev’d Terry Winrow
2 Cor. 5.16-end
Luke 15.1-3, 11-32
This morning is the fourth in our Lent series looking at the building blocks of our spiritual renewal. Our subject today is Christian witness.
To some degree this will test just how far the contemporary view of religion being a private affair, of which I spoke of last week, has permeated into our consciousness. For many, I suspect, may baulk at the idea of being called to take the gospel, the good news of Christ, to those who have never or no longer believe.
Realistically, much of Europe is now very largely post Christian. The age of Christendom has passed. The prevailing mood is a reaction against authority and the false promises …

Rev’d Terry Winrow
Psalm 133
Colossians 3.12-17
John 17.13-23
Today is the third in our Lent series looking at the building blocks of our spiritual renewal. Our focus today is on ‘Travelling Together’, basically what it means to ‘be church’.
To help us in our thoughts today, I propose 4 images around which I shall speak. Our first image is the chicks.
Believing and Belonging.
One of the great trends of modern life in the West is the celebration of the freedom of the individual. Since the Reformation there has also been stress on individual belief, where faith is very much a personal and private affair. There is a real danger here then of seeing ‘church’ simply as a collection of separate and …

Rejoice Always?

Revd Terry Winrow
16th Dec 2012
Zephaniah 3.14-20, Philippians 4.4-7, Luke 3.7-18
This morning’s sermon was completed on Thursday night. I knew I had a full schedule of commitments on Friday and Saturday. Then on Friday afternoon came the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the USA. The readings today are the set readings for the 3rd Sunday in Advent. You will have noticed a key theme is rejoicing.
What I hope to show this morning is that the biblical understanding of joy and rejoicing does not entail laughing in the face of deep sadness. It does not ignore sadness rather embraces it.
To preach on the biblical theme of joy and rejoicing may seem at first to be …

Faith under Fire

SERMON: 18th November 2012
Revd Terry Winrow
Daniel 12.1-3                 Hebrews 10.11-25                 Mark 13.1-8
Forgiving God, your word be our rule, in it may we rejoice. Your grace be our aim, your holy will our choice. Amen.
This week we have witnessed widespread demonstrations across Europe highlighting the painful social upheaval being experienced across Europe and the USA. We have also seen how fragile the peace in the Middle East is. Closer to home, the NWN reported last week a tremendous rise in those registered homeless in West Berkshire. Evidence of lives shattered, stability, permanence, security replaced by fear, depression and hopelessness. Life can so easily become insecure, fragile. In the midst of these stories will be individual stories of …

Environment Sunday Sermon 2007

Environment Sunday
Isaiah 6: 1 – 8 Isaiah meets God in Temple
John 3: 1 – 15 Nicodemus meets Jesus
I want to start with what might seem an odd question…
What is your relationship to the earth, to the world?
This isn’t a question about your relationship in Biblical language to ‘worldly things’. I’m asking what your relationship is to creation, to nature?
Some might answer that the earth, creation, nature is a gift, a present from God. Or maybe the earth and its treasures are a commodity for our well being and consumption. Maybe for some the world is something that God made and left to us to manage. It’s a force that needs to be tempered, managed, controlled or …
